Gender discrimination in Laws and protecting Women and Girls from Violence, in Erbil


On the 17th of November 2021, Women Empowerment Organization (WEO) in partnership with EuroMed Feminist Initiative (EFI) and under the patronage of the Judicial Council of Kurdistan region, organized an Experts’ roundtable on #Gender_discrimination in Laws and protecting Women and Girls from Violence, in #Erbil. The meeting included speeches from:

Judge Nigar Ahmed Mohammed, Representative of the President of Judicial Council of Kurdistan Region, Dr. Basheer Hadad, Former Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Ms. Suzan Aref, President of WEO and Ms. Borianna Jonsson, Executive Director of EFI. The meeting aimed to discuss the discriminatory legislation in KRG and share the lessons learned from combating violence against women and girls in the region.

The roundtable gathered members in the Parliamentary and the Judicial Council of Kurdistan Region, governmental stakeholders, legal and women rights and gender experts. The experts discussed the discriminatory articles in the Personal Status Law, Penal Code and the Law on violence against women in KRG and presented arguments for amending or annulling these laws and advocacy strategies for legislative change in Kurdistan. The meeting ended with recommendations regarding gender discrimination laws in KRG.
