On 15th of May 2017, Women Empowerment Organization (WEO) in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) held a one day conference entitled
“Religious Tolerance and Peace Education for Islamic Imams” aiming to enhance religious tolerance and peace education among Islamic Imams and preachers to achieve stability and religious coexistence among different groups living in Kurdistan region. The conference started with an opening panel by Dr. Pshtiwan Sadiq, Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, Ms. Suzan Aref director of WEO, Mullah Abdullah Saaeed, Head of the Islamic Scholars Union in Kurdistan, Ms. Barbara Sabtizer KAS Representative. The conference had been attended by participates from government officials particularly from the ministry of Awqaf and Religious Endowment, Department of Foreign Relations , political parties, Imams coming from Islamic Scholars Union, representatives of civil society organizations, international organizations, academics, activists in religious dialogue and Bahai, Yezide, Zardashti and Christian representatives. A panel discussion takes place for an hour, in which many ideas derived from the Sharia, heritage and history were presented in accordance with the reality of the Kurdistan Region and discussed the challenges facing the promotion of a culture of peace and the initiatives and ideas presented by the Ministry of Awqaf in cooperation with representatives of the other religions. The session witnessed important discussions and many questions and then followed by a session of research recommendations and proposals, which included many ideas and results.
